GRDA set to order natural gas turbine to replace coal unit at Chouteau

 

VINITA — The Grand River Dam Authority expects to finalize an agreement Friday to buy the first natural gas turbine of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

Made by Mitsubishi Power Systems at its plant in Savannah, Ga., the turbine will be the central component of a new 495-megawatt combined cycle generating plant at the GRDA's Grand River Energy Center — formerly known as the coal-fired complex — near Chouteau.

 

"This is new technology that, to my knowledge, surpasses anything in the United States," said Charles Barney, the GRDA's assistant general manager of thermal and hydro generation.
